Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common condition we see in cats, particularly as they age. There may not be any obvious signs in the early stages, so early detection is key to managing the disease effectively and ensuring a good quality of life.

Signs of Kidney Disease in Cats

Common signs of chronic kidney disease in cats include:

    • Increased thirst and urination
    • Weight loss
    • Decreased appetite
    • Lethargy
    • Vomiting or nausea
    • Poor coat condition
    • Bad breath

Signs can vary and in the early stages there may be no obvious sign, making routine check-ups essential for early diagnosis.

Early Detection and Diagnosis

Routine screening for chronic kidney disease is crucial, especially in older cats. Early detection allows for better management and can significantly improve a cat’s can lifespan and well-being. Cats cope very well with chronic kidney disease, often living years after diagnosis with minimal intervention if detected early.

To diagnose chronic kidney disease we perform:

Blood and urine tests to assess kidney function

Blood pressure checks to detect hypertension, common in cats with kidney disease

In some cases, we may need to send samples to an external laboratory for confirmation, especially in the early stages.

Once diagnosed, we stage kidney disease using the International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) guidelines.  This helps us decide on a management plan that could include monitoring, dietary adjustments, medications, fluid therapy, and avoiding certain drugs that can stress the kidneys.

National Kidney Month – Special Screening Offer

March is National Kidney Month, with World Kidney Day on March 9th, 2025. To support our feline patients, Halifax Vets is offering discounted kidney screening throughout March.

Our kidney screening includes:

    • A nurse visit to check blood pressure and collect a blood sample
    • A vet visit for a full health examination and urine sample collection
    • Results available within a few days

If your cat’s test results indicate changes in kidney function, we’ll provide recommendations for further testing (if required) and a tailored management plan. Early detection can make a significant difference, sometimes we even find other underlying health conditions unrelated to the kidneys!

Book your cat’s kidney screening today and help them live a healthier, longer life.
