Spring means warmer days, longer walks and more time outside. It can also bring a few seasonal problems for our pets. Here are some things to keep an eye out for over the next few months.
Itchy skin and allergies
Spring can mean more itchy skin for some pets. You might notice more scratching, licking or chewing at their paws, red or irritated skin, or recurring ear problems.
Itchy skin can have a number of causes, including environmental allergies, fleas and food sensitivities. Nutrition can also be useful in managing some skin conditions, with veterinary diets available specifically to support skin health.

Fleas and ticks
Warmer weather is a good reminder to check that your pet’s flea treatment is up to date.
Ticks are also found around Nelson and Tasman. Dogs can pick them up in long grass and scrub, particularly around rural areas and places where livestock are grazed.
Check your dog after walks, especially around the head, ears, neck, feet and between the toes. Ticks can be very small before they have fed, so they’re not always easy to spot.
Not all flea treatments provide tick protection, so check your pet’s product or ask us if you’re unsure.
Watch out for grass seeds
Grass seeds can easily get caught in your pet’s coat, ears or between their toes.
Keep an eye out for persistent licking or chewing at a paw, head shaking, or anything that seems suddenly sore or uncomfortable, particularly after your dog has been through long grass.
Out in the garden
Spring is a great time to get back into the garden, usually with a bit of help from our pets! Just be mindful of things they might decide to investigate or eat, including slug and snail bait, fertilisers, compost and some plants.
Keep garden products stored safely away and check that any new plants are pet-friendly.
