Professional Dental Treatment

What Is a Professional Dental Treatment?

Often referred to as a dental scale and polish or prophy, professional dental treatment includes a thorough examination, cleaning, polishing, and charting of your pet’s teeth under general anaesthesia. Done properly, it can reverse early periodontal disease and help avoid extractions.

What Is Involved?

Dental Examination:
Each tooth is checked for tartar, gum inflammation, pockets, fractures, and resorptive lesions (in cats).

Cleaning:
Teeth and gums are flushed with an antibacterial chlorhexidine solution to reduce harmful bacteria. We use advanced ultrasonic scalers to remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line, improving efficiency and reducing anaesthetic time.

Polishing:
Polishing smooths the tooth surfaces, making it harder for plaque and debris to stick. Our iM3 dental unit ensures safe, low-heat polishing to protect tooth enamel.

Irrigation:
A final rinse clears away bacteria, polishing paste, and debris from under the gumline to prevent irritation and infection.

Post-Cleaning Exam & Diagnostics:
After cleaning, each tooth is re-checked. If needed, dental X-rays are taken to assess root health or areas below the gum line.

Charting:
We record detailed findings including gum health, tooth condition, and any home care needs. Radiographs are saved to your pet’s file and shared with you. Follow-up care may be recommended depending on your pet’s needs.
